Today’s Cartmel picks for July 21, 2025 highlight two strong contenders in the Greenbanks Arbiculture Handicap Hurdle (2m6f, 11 hurdles, soft ground). Before diving into why Rioja Alta and Coup De Gold deserve a punt, it’s worth understanding how handicap races work—and where value lies. As explained in the excellent article “Understanding handicap races: how to maximize your betting value”, the Official Rating (OR) and assigned weight aim to level the field—but smart punters know that identifying well‑handicapped horses can yield great returns

2m6f (2m6f31y) Greenbanks Arbiculture Handicap Hurdle (Div II) (Class 5) (4yo+ 0-100)
🟩 Rioja Alta 10/3 (1.5pt Win)
Rioja Alta looks well placed to win this weaker race after finishing third over course and distance in a much stronger contest back in May. He’s the only one here running off the maximum OR of 100 and has top jockey Brian Hughes on board. Soft ground shouldn’t be an issue, and the drop in class gives him an ideal opportunity to get his head in front. He sets the clear standard on ratings and form.
🟨 Coup De Gold 15/2 (1pt e/w 3 places)
Coup De Gold has slipped to a very workable mark and showed enough when fourth on his latest start to suggest he’s ready to strike. With conditions turning soft, that could suit him well based on past efforts in testing ground. He’s got experience over staying trips and faces some out-of-form rivals. If able to travel smoothly into the race, he’s got every chance of outrunning his odds and landing this low-grade contest.
