The biggest shock of the year in horse racing
Qirat just pulled off the impossible. Trained by Ralph Beckett and ridden by Richard Kingscote, the 4-year-old gelding won the Group 1 Sussex Stakes at Goodwood 2025… at 150/1 odds! Yes, you read that right. While everyone was watching Field Of Gold, Rosallion and Henri Matisse, this longshot stunned the racing world.
Pure luck? Not exactly
You might think it was all down to luck, but there’s more to the story:
- No blinkers this time: Beckett admitted that in his previous race, Qirat didn’t take well to the first-time blinkers and ran far too keenly. This time, without them, he settled and delivered.
- Smart race positioning: Qirat went forward early, dictated the pace, and when the others came to challenge, he just kept going.
- Right ground, right trip: The Good ground and the one-mile trip at Goodwood seemed to suit him perfectly — more than most punters (myself included) expected.
So… what now?
After a win like that, Qirat is no longer just a background name on a racecard. But let’s not kid ourselves — one shock win doesn’t make him a superstar overnight.
The takeaway? In horse racing, sometimes the horse you didn’t even glance at is the one that makes the headlines. That’s the beauty (and pain) of the game.
